Cartridge filters are equipped with cartridges consisting of porous media tubes that have a very fine porosity so that even the smallest solid particles can be filtered from the liquid aluminium. Thermcon design and manufacturer special filter boxes including the PLC controlled electric heating system, the re-line and preheating stands and the tools to change the cartridges.
The cartridges themselves are acquired from Metaullics. The filter boxes that are fully refractory-lined for best heat insulation can be configured to specific inlet/outlet positioning, as necessary to fit in either existing or new launder systems. Filtration efficiency depends on a number of factors. The superiority of the bonded particle Metaullics cartridge filter bundles is based upon its pore structure and fineness, specific binder system, and great surface area provided by the cartridge configuration. Factors such as metal flow rate and inherent incoming metal cleanliness also affect filtration efficiency. Generally, the 20 and 24 grit filters are fully capable of removing virtually all inclusions down to 5 microns.
Metaullics tube bundles are bundled into assemblies of 3 to 22 tubes. The assembly size is determined by metal flow rate, grit size of the filter media, throughput desired, and quality expectations. Fine grits, 10 - 12 - 14, permit higher flow rates and higher throughput for a given tube bundle assembly. Very fine grit sizes, 16 - 20 - 24, provide the highest filtration efficiency levels, with larger tube assemblies necessary to accommodate the specific casting flow rate and throughput required.
